Marvin Eberle Moore, age 91, of Batesville, the only Superintendent of the Southside School District for the first 29 years of its existence, died at this home on Thursday, August 19.

A member of a pioneer Independence County family, he was born September 28, 1912 in Moorefield, Arkansas, which was named for his grandfather. He was the son of the late Malcom Eberle and Maud Marvin (Mack) Moore and was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nita Raye (Magness) Moore, who died in 1998. He was an educator for over forty years and began that career as a teacher in Moorefield in 1936. The Special School District #3 was formed in 1948 by consolidation of Egner-Powell, McHue, Salado and Goodie Creek districts and Moore, who was teaching in the Magness school, was engaged as superintendent. As the initial superintendent he had the honor of naming the school "Southside" and selecting the school's colors and mascot. He served as superintendent until his retirement in 1977. In 2001 a new Southside High School annex building was named the Marvin E. Moore Complex in his honor. At the dedication service of the complex several speakers referred to him as "Mr. Southside," a tribute to his "character, honesty, respect, perseverance and dignity."

He was a lifetime member of the Moorefield United Methodist Church, having served as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent and as Chairman of the Administrative Board for many years. He was active in the Batesville area as a lay speaker in various churches for over thirty years. He enjoyed reading and gardening and was a prolific writer of poetry which he used in his devotional messages. He was appointed to fill an unexpired term on the Batesville City Council and served from January 8, 1980 until December 31, 1982, and was a summer faculty member in the Education Department of Arkansas (Lyon) College for several years.

He was a graduate of Batesville High School and Arkansas College. He attended the Peabody School of Education of Vanderbilt University and received a Masters Degree in School Administration from Memphis State University (University of Memphis).

He is survived by his daughter, Marva Hipp and her husband Dr. Ben Hipp, of Batesville; a sister, Ernestine Goff of Moorefield; granddaughters Melissa Potter of Nashville, Tennessee, and Melanie Daugherty of Andover, Minnesota; great-grandsons Ryan and Carson Potter, and great-granddaughters Shelby Potter and Kailey Daugherty; niece Moorene Newton of Hot Springs, Arkansas; great nieces Susan Newton of Arlington, Virginia, and Angela Chambers of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; great-great nephew Andrew Chambers.
