Forest was the son of Jess and Mary M.(Shoop) McElwain. The family farmed in Louisa and Linn Counties, Iowa in the early 1900's. In the 1910 census the family lived at Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. Forest was the brother of: Edward, Jessie, Leola, Andrew, Adam, Erva, Mary, Robert, Ruth, and Jeanette.
In the 1930 census, Forest was married; wife was Coral and daughter, Virginia. They lived in Long Beach, California where Forest worked as a grocer. In the 1940 census, he was divorced and was farming, living at Long Beach.
Forest met Mary Violet Nichols at the Spit and Argue Club at the Pike in Long Beach, California. They were married January 22, 1941 and were parents of daughter, Mary Arleen.
Forest and Mary were members of the First Baptist Church of Long Beach and helped build the new church building at 10th and Pine in 1949. After the death of their daughter, they raised their granddaughter, Cheri.
