About 55 years of age according to his death certificate. But in the 1880 census, it looks like he could have been born around 1858. A son of Samuel Thomas (Squire Sam) and Sarah (Sallie) Duncan Martin. He was single, and worked as a "pin hooker" at Gorrells "W." House, (whatever that was, and lived at 211 West 6th St. in Winston-Salem at the time of his death.
