Obituary:
Mr. Joseph Leon "Joe" Carter, 73 of Blackshear, passed away Friday, July 28, 2012, at his residence in Fernandina.

Born in Alma, GA on September 8, 1938, he had lived in Pierce County all of his adult life. He graduated from Bacon County High School in 1956 and went on to graduate from the University of Georgia in 1960 with a BS degree in Agriculture and Economics with a minor in Business. Mr. Carter was a member of Alpha Zeta Honor Society and Alpha Gamma Fraternity. In 1961 Mr. Carter went to work with the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Department in Dublin, GA. He later went to work for The Brantley Company in Blackshear and retired from Gillis Brothers in Blackshear in 2007.

Mr. Carter was a former Elder of the Blackshear Presbyterian Church where he and his wife of 51 years were married. His loves were his family, his vacations in the mountains, the camp on the intercoastal waterway, fishing, golfing, his goats and the farm.

Mr. Carter was a son of the late Joseph Roy & Freddie Wade Carter.

Survivors include his wife, Susie C. Carter of Blackshear; his daughter and son-in-law, Susan & Jonathan Meyer of Jacksonville; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph & Ann Carter of Alma; his sister, Carolyn Nall of Alma; his brother, Benny Roy Carter of Alma; 4 grandchildren, Mara Carter, Meagan (Michael) Tallent, Carter Wade Meyer and Alan Reiser Meyer and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Visitation:
Visitation for Mr. Carter will be held Monday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at the funeral home.

Service:
Funeral services for Mr. Carter will be held at 10:00 o'clock Tuesday morning, July 31, 2012, at the Blackshear Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Carter will lay in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Ben James Cemetery.
