Johnny Banks, 76, of Silver City passed away in Fort Bayard Medical Center on Monday, April 9. The prayer vigil will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bright Funeral Home by Deacon Bill Holguin. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Father Rod Nichols officiating. Interment will be in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Banks was born April 21, 1924, in Silver City. He was the son of Maggie Banks, who preceded him in death. Mr. Banks was loved by all of Silver City, having served as grand marshal of the Fourth of July Parade and as Western New Mexico University mascot. He was a faithful follower of Silver High School and Western New Mexico Universty sports. He was most noted for his colorful dress. At games, he would help the cheerleaders cheer their teams toward victory. His overall enthusiastic approach to life was appreciated by all who knew him. One could always get a friendly smile and wave from him as he rested on the park bench on Hudson Street or wherever one might meet him. Pallbearers for Mr. Banks will be Ron Hall, Rudy Jacquez, Tommy Ryan, Bodie Chavez, John Carter and Earseye Ross. Bright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
