Virginia "Le Juan" Shrimplin, age 79 of Manhattan, Kansas died from lung cancer, Wednesday morning, July 25, 2012 at Good Shepherd Hospice House with her husband and granddaughter by her side. Le Juan was born July 3, 1933 in Sayre, Oklahoma. Her parents James Charles and Ethel Mae Smith were older parents with one deceased child, Vonda, when Le Juan was born into their home. Le Juan graduated from Central State University of Oklahoma and moved to Deerfield, Kansas to begin her teaching and career in business. There, she met Thomas E. Shrimplin. They married in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, August 12, 1956.
Le Juan and Tom proceeded to farm north of Holcomb, Kansas, raise two children, Jay Charles and Charla Jean. The family moved to Alta Vista, Kansas, then to Hope, Kansas, and later Manhattan Kansas where the couple settled for the rest of Le Juan's life.
Le Juan was employed as a business teacher during the time she raised her children. After moving to Manhattan, she shifted teaching to the Kansas State University Business Department for Fort Riley students. She continued her career, working for Waddell and Reed, then owning and running H&R Block income tax stores.
Upon retirement, Le Juan became full-time active volunteering for various groups in Manhattan. Her focus was the Riley County Genealogical Society. Le Juan and Tom also did a tremendous amount of traveling internationally, focusing on genealogical studies and World War II historical sites.
Le Juan is survived by her spouse of 55 years, Thomas "Pete" Shrimplin in Manhattan, Kansas. Her daughter Charla "Charlie" Shrimplin and her significant other, Craig F. Genovese both living in the Mojave National Preserve of Cima, California. Le Juan's granddaughter, Chelsea "Frances" Shrimplin lives in Bloomington, Indiana. Le Juan's son, Jay Shrimplin died July 29, 2008 in Manhattan Kansas.
The family will receive friends 4:00-5:30 pm Sunday, July 29, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
