Ambrose was an outstanding cricketer, written up in the 1885 Winnipeg Free Press and then selected captain in 1888.

"In selecting an international team the name of Mr. A. H. Dickins, formerly captain of the Morchiston Cast school eleven,... should receive the attention due to such a sterling cricketer." Winnipeg Free Press, 1885

In 1886 he married Jessie Gouin in Winnipeg and they raised three sons:

Hugh Manners Dickins 1893 – 1895
Francis Collingwood Dickins 1896 – 1969
Clennell Haggerston Dickins 1899 – 1995
