Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church with Mickey Carter officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home.
John was born on October 22, 1919 in Kosse, Texas, to Oscar Dile Holton, Sr. and Nannie Elizabeth Rogers Holton. He married Mary Nell Scruggs on February 9, 1941 in Wellington. She died in 2008.
He came with his family to Wellington in 1922. He was a graduate of Wellington High School with the Class of 1937 and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II.
John was a 60 year member of the Wellington Masonic Lodge #763 AF and AM, the York Rite, and the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Wellington Community Civic Club for 74 years.
He was a retail fuel distributor, involved in ranching and banking. He received the Collingsworth Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year for sales and service in 2011.
Survivors include 3 daughters Linda John Mitchell of Wellington, Joyce Ann Mauldin of Oklahoma City, and Nancy Beth Carter and husband Mickey of Omaha, TX.; his son John Elbert Holton, Jr. and wife Cindy of Wellington; 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson Kent Crosby, a granddaughter Patricia Ann Carter, 2 sons-in-law Gene Mitchell and Richard Mauldin, 3 brothers and a sister.
