Mary Nell Scruggs Holton, 88, of Wellington, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008.

Mrs. Holton was a life long member of the Wellington First United Methodist Church where she taught the children's choir for many years and was a member of the Lydia Circle. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and was awarded the 50 year pin in 2007.

She studied art under Dort Fitz, Ray Vanilla and several other prominent artists of this area winning numerous awards in the county fair. She was an officer in the Federated Music Club, member of the Collingsworth County Art League and nominated for the Golden Nail Award.

Mary Nell and husband John, led the communion services for the Wellington Care Center for many years. She helped plant trees and flowers in the Collingsworth County General Hospital courtyard and loved playing golf.

Mrs. Holton was born in Memphis on August 30, 1919 to George and Bessie Pearl McCrory Scruggs. She graduated from Wellington High School with the Class of 1937 and received her teaching certificate from West Texas State Teachers College in Canyon. She taught in Lazare and Wellington Schools. She married John Elbert Holton in Wellington on February 9, 1941. They were married for 67 years.

Survivors include husband John Holton of Wellington; four daughters, Linda Mitchell of Shamrock, Joyce Mauldin and husband Richard of Oklahoma City, OK, Nancy Carter and husband Mickey of Omaha, TX; and one son, Johnny Holton and Cindy Fires of Wellington; nine grandchildren, Larry Lacy and companion Sharon of Shamrock, Lee Lacy and wife Gloria of Shamrock, Jeff Mauldin and wife Keri of Albuquerque, NM, Keitha Ann Nilsson and husband Aaron of Daingerfield, Bud Carter and wife Shana of Omaha, TX, Jamie Barnes and husband Jeff of Bixby, OK, Heather Holton of Dallas, Jessica Farmer and husband Jonathan of Lubbock, and L.J. Holton of Wellington.

She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Wesley, Ryan and Megan Lacy, Mitch, Micah and Anna Lacy, Seth and John Cody Carter and Carson Mauldin.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews and her long time friend and care giver, Elva Guajardo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Nathan and Bessie Pearl McCrory Scruggs; two brothers, George and Horace Wesley Scruggs; three sisters, Willie (Bill) Wells, Mildred Starr and Frankie Duncan; two grandchildren, Patricia Ann Carter and Wesley Kent Crosby; and one son-in-law, Gene Mitchell.
