Son of Howard Mahlan and Estelle Marie Hulse, John "Jack" Mahlan, born in Bayport and raised in Patchogue, was a graduate of Maryland College and was an electrical engineer. He was a United States Navy veteran who had served 2 years in the South Pacific as a Navy signalman. He had been currently working at the Post Office in Glen Burnie, Md. Mr. Mahlan was a murder victim in Anne Arundel County, Md. along with his girlfriend Mary C. Kline. They were shot and beaten to death in a wooded area on Defense Highway just west of Annapolis. He was an only child. Surviving, besides his parents, are his two grandmothers, Mrs. Nena Mahlan of Bayport and Mrs. Charlotte Hulse of 45 Liberty Street, Patchogue. His pallbearers, some of which were former schoolmates at Patchogue High School were; Jack Bausch, Robert Bailey, Robert Perry, Robert Houston, Philip Hulse and Leverett Hulse, Jr. Services were held at 2 p.m. September 24th in the C.W. Ruland Sons Funeral chapel, Patchogue with the Rev. Harry S. Crossett, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating and interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
