Minister, Author, Editor, Teacher, Publisher, Christian Statesman, Elder, Bishop, Retailer, were the few titles Mr. Miller carried with him through life. He was born 8 miles west of Hagerstown near Broadfording, Maryland. He was baptized near his boyhood home Feb. 22, 1863. He taught one room school houses in Washington County, Maryland and Franklin County, Pennsylvania, early. He married Elizabeth Talley, they were extensive world travelers in their later years, making many over seas trips. Yokohama, Japan in 1896 among those places visited. Soon he followed family and others to Ogle County, Illinois near Mount Morris where he went into business with Oliver Hicks in the retail business, 1890 he started a publication business in Mount Morris, named Brethren Publishing Co., at age 45 Elder He was ordained to the ministry and later becoming a Bishop, he was also President of the Rock River Seminary or Mount Morris College, due to ailing business location he moved his publication to Elgin, Illinois where he served as President of Brethren Publishing Company, he also served on the General Mission Board of Directors. He was the Author of a number of books over his lifetime, and the Editor of the "Messenger" a widely read Brethren Publication. 1921 Mr. Miller a Bishop fell ill on the way to the Annual Conference near Waynesboro, PA. United Church of Brethren, 1863; Minister, 1887; Elder 1891. Engaged in business in Polo, 1868-1879. Became business manager Mt. Morris College, 1879; active in church publications, 1882; began his seven world pilgrimages, 1883; lectured, preached and wrote much till the time of his death, June 1921. Office editor of Gospel Messenger, 1885-1891; editor-in-chief, 1891 till death. Member General Mission Board, 1885-1910, and life member till death. Long-time member board of trustees Mount Morris College. As to Annual Meeting, six times on Standing Committee, four times secretary, two time moderator. Author, Europe and Bible Lands, 1884; Wanderings in Bible Lands, 1894; Seven Churches of Asia, 1894; Girdling the Globe, 1897; The Eternal Verities, 1897; The Other Half of the Globe, 1907; co-author Some Who Led, 1912. He was a great leader in business and religion, generous in his philanthropies, and easily one of the greatest men the Church of the Brethren has produced.
