THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS -- 28 APR 1928 --Death Again Stalks Into County Jail --Andrew Le Mahieu Is Suicide Victim This Morning --Hangs Self With A Strip From Blanket Despondency Believed to be the Motive for Suicide of Man Who Was to be Examined for Mental Condition -- Hanging Occurs at 8:30 a.m. Today -- Widow is Notified by Sheriff For the second time within the last three weeks death stalked through the Sheboygan County Jail and claimed a human life through violent methods. The latest victim was Andrew Le Mahieu, aged about 39, a farmer who resided on the old Schreiber homestead about three miles east of Plymouth. He tore a strip off a blanket and this he attached to his belt which he had fastened through two openings in the false ceiling of the cell in which he had been confined over night. The act was committed about 8:30 o'clock this morning while other prisoners in that section of the jail were engaged in conversation. Hearing strange noises, these prisoners approached the cell and observed Le Mahieu's body sagging with the strip of blanket wrapped around his neck. They gave the alarm and turnkey John Rawlings hurriedly entered the cell and severed the strip of blanket. Coroner Dr. C.N. Sonnenburg and City Health Physician Willard M. Sonnenburg were notified and both quickly came to the jail. An examination showed the unfortunate man was dead. Mr. Le Mahieu was married and this morning his wife Olive was notified of the tragic ending of her husband, and requested to arrange for the removal of the body from the county jail. Later Undertaker Dean of Sheboygan Falls came and took charge of the remains. Despondency is believed to have caused Mr. Le Mahieu to take his life. This week he was served with notice of foreclosure proceedings on the farm property on which he and his wife and three children resided, and on Thursday night, it is said, he threatened to commit suicide. Sheriff Paul W. Schmidt was notifed and yesterday he went to the farm home and brought Mr. Le Mahieu to the county jail for retention until an examination as to his mentality could be made.

Following their graduation from the Milwaukee school, Mr. Le Mahieu taught in the public school of Manitowoc for some time and Miss Olive Melendy, who later became Mrs. Le Mahieu, taught in the Grant school of this city for two years. After their marriage the couple resided on the old Schrieber homestead located on the Plymouth road about three miles east of that city.
