Gertrude Heslinga, 68, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Hospice Comfort House in Pella, Iowa.

She was born December 20, 1936, at Cook County, Illinois, the daughter of John and Cornelia Van Schouwen Boender. In 1949 she moved with her family to the Oskaloosa area.

On March 22, 1957, she was united in marriage to Clyde Heslinga at her parents' home in Oskaloosa. Together they farmed around New Sharon and Oskaloosa until 1978, when they moved to Oskaloosa. After they moved to town, Gertrude worked part-time at the Good Time Daycare Center. Gertrude was a homemaker all her life.

She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa; she was also a member of the Oskaloosa Quilters Guild and the Oskaloosa Bowling League. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing music (especially her accordion), which she shared with shut-ins, interior decorating, flower gardens, and traveling. Later in life she took oil-painting lessons, and her works were displayed in many exhibits in Oskaloosa and other towns.

Gertrude is survived by her husband, Clyde Heslinga of Oskaloosa; 3 sons, Doug (and Janet) Heslinga of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gary (and Trish) Heslinga of Cleveland, Ohio, and Chris (and April) Heslinga of Shenandoah; 7 grandchildren, James, Dusty, Scott, Amanda, Jake, Amberly, and Adam Heslinga; a great-granddaughter, Tori Shifflet; and 4 sisters, Rose Van Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa, Pat (and Don) DeBruin of Oskaloosa, Sharon (and John) Vander Pol of Boulder, Colorado, and Darlene (and Ken) Roozeboom of Downers Grove, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roger Boender; a sister, Betty Stursma; and a brother-in-law, Ron Van Veldhuizen.

Funeral services for Gertrude Heslinga will be held Monday, March 28, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Kenneth Dykstra officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 Monday morning in the church basement. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Sunday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, and the family will be at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 to 5 Sunday afternoon to greet friends and relatives.
