Born November 17, 1925 in Chicago, IL, he was a son of the late Dominick Abate and the late Martha Loss Abate. Joe served his country in the United States Navy. He retired after 39 years from Perfection American and he and his late wife, Jewel F. Abate were former owners of Jewels Restaurant and Catering. He loved to play the guitar and enjoyed watching baseball, especially his favorite team, the White Sox. Mr. Abate attended First Church of God in Darlington and Abundant Life in Florence.
Surviving are three sons; Don (Lora) Abate of Big Stone Gap, VA, Steven Gehrke of Florence, Doug (Lynn) Gehrke of Darlington; a daughter-in-law, Charlene Abate of Wytheville, VA, grandchildren: Aaron Abate, Nick Abate, Kristen Abate, Matthew Abate, Cody Abate, Brandon Gehrke, Brook (Cortney) Gehrke and Kacie Gehrke; and one great-grandchild, Haley Gehrke.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Joe Abate.
