She was a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and a research associate of historian Douglas Southall Freeman. She won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1958, along with Columbia University's Loubat Prize also in 1958, for her book on George Washington. Mrs. Ashworth was raised in Florida, relocated to Virginia in her teenaged years, and graduated from Hollins College in Hollins, VA. She later served on the Hollins College Board. She died of a ruptured aorta in Richmond, VA.
