Anthony was born in Youngstown, Ohio (the 7th child of 12) to John and Madeline Popio Lallo.

His parents were immigrants from Colobraro, Matera, Basilicata, Italy and the family name was originally Gallo.

He married Helen Ruth Zmitrowicz in 1931 and his son John was born the following year. Soon after they divorced and he married Anna Russell. Their daughter Bernadene was born the following year.

His nickname was "LuLu".

After a long illness he died at home of his parents at age 29.
