Born in Brighton, he was the son of the late Carmen and Loretta (Tramentozzi) Leone of San Donato, Italy. He was raised and educated in Brighton, going to New York with the St. Louis Browns after high school. Ned was drafted into WWII in 1944. After the war Ned became a carpenter and worked independently throughout the North Shore doing carpentry work and building.

Ned could play golf on a professional level and enjoyed playing cards at the Thomson Country Club in North Reading. His neighbor was Carl Yastrzemski and they became close friends. Ned died at the Pilgrim Nursing Home in Peabody.
