Born in Wilhelmsburg, East Prussia. From November 1887 on he was one of the doctors of crown prince Friedrich of Prussia and performed a tracheotomy on him in February 1888, saving his life. Emperor Wilhelm II ennobled him in 1890. He died in Halle (Saale) where he had worked as a professor and director of the University hospital since 1890.
