Lucy (Lucia) Rosa Collura was born in San Stefano, Sicily, the daughter of Rocco Cerniglia (Americanized to Cheneler) and Rosa Merlo. She emigrated with her mother and sisters and brothers through Ellis Island in 1902, and made several trips back and forth to Sicily. In 1906 she remained in Sicily for three years with her sister Regina, who had just lost her son. She met her husband Michelangelo (Michael) Collura in Galesburg, IL. They raised four children in Illinois, and moved to San Diego in the 1950s. Lucy loved to cook (Italian-style of course!), sew, tell stories and laugh.

Note her maiden name was actually Cerniglia, but because of pronunciation problems, her father Americanized the spelling to Cheneler.
