By the time he entered Kansas City's Central High School in 1920, Heinlein had already read every book on astronomy in the Kansas City Public Library. A 1929 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Heinlein was invalidated out of the service in 1934 with tuberculosis, which caused him to take up writing after a brief political career. He served as a civilian engineer with the U.S. Navy in World War II.
