Headstone shows 1831 birth year, but headstones are done by relatives that may guess. His 1900 Census at age 70 he states Jan 1830, but perhaps he was senile by then or in poor health or wife didn't remember correctly. The earliest available to pinpoint is 1850 Census calculation and would be 1832. The 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census would all indicate 1831. His parents documented marriage is 29 Jan 1831, according to Ancestry Maryland, Compiled Marriages, 1655-1850, transcribed index, not original and he was oldest child. So I'm going to change to 1831, as the most and earliest sources state. I find many marriages taking place a few months or a month before the first child is born. This would make the marriage a day after his birth. Sometimes parents will obscure the truth in order to what they feel protects the child. People usually find out. However, I had a great-grandparent that said she couldn't remember and then her child didn't find out until she was in her 70's and her mother was gone. It's better to tell the truth and what I find is that every family has issues, and if you think a family is perfect, you just don't know them well enough.
