NASHVILLE - Julius Abernethy, 93, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 28, 2012 at Autumn Care of Nashville, NC. He was born August 14, 1918 in Nash County, the son of J. E. Abernethy and Ruth B. Wheless Abernethy. Julius was a veteran of WWII and served from 1942-1945 in the Army, 310th Field Artillery, 79th Infantry Division. He participated in the Normandy Invasion, Battle of the Bulge, and Surrender of Berlin. He graduated as Valedictorian from Nashville High School in 1935; continued his education at East Carolina University for his mathematics degree and after his military service, he attended UNC Chapel Hill for his masters in Mathematics. Julius taught school in Reidsville, NC, Charlotte, NC, and most of his career at Rocky Mount Senior High School where he was instrumental in the creation of the Math Lab. He is predeceased by his father, mother, and his wife, Annie B. Anthony Abernethy. Also, brothers, Alfred Wheless Abernethy and John Winstead "Buddy" Abernethy; sisters, Sarah Frances Abernethy, Ruth Mae Abernethy Belche, Katherine Marie Abernethy Boone; half-sisters, Bessie Abernethy Layton, Beatrice Vaughn Abernethy; half-brothers, George Edward Abernethy, Charles Osborne Abernethy and Clatie Hobert Abernethy; nephews, S. Grant Boone, Elton Abernethy and niece, Judy Belche Parrish.
Julius is survived by his nieces, Ruth "Libby" Belche May, Gloria Abernethy Smith, Phyllis Abernethy Hardee, Susan Abernethy Surles, and Katherine Abernethy Tyson; nephews, A. Wallace Abernethy, John Calvin Abernethy Little, John A. Boone, and Samuel J. Boone. There are numerous great-nieces and nephews and great, great- nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Autumn Care for the loving care they gave him and especially his extended family, Donna Colegrove and Tarsha Strickland.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, May 31st, 2012 from 12:45pm until 1:45 pm with a service following at 2:00PM at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Nashville, NC with the Reverend Ralph A. Brown officiating. Burial will take place following the service at Forest Hills Cemetery in Nashville, NC .In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Nashville United Methodist Church, 209 E. Washington St Nashville, NC 27856.
