Charles' grandfather's full name was probably James Lacy Rayfield Mayo, not just Lacy Rayfield Mayo, as listed on FindAGrave.

Charles' mother went blind after his birth and could not care for him, so Alta Dee Edwards brought him home and raised him as her "adopted" son, although she never legally adopted him. He and Alta's daughter, Bea Lea Willis, grew up together, and when Bea got married and moved away, Charles continued to live in the Vandemere, NC house probably built by Alta's parents. Alta's older sister, Pearl Edwards, never married, so she and Charles continued to live in the house until Pearl's death. Alta had died at a young age.

Bea sent her children, Donna (born 1944) & Bobby, Jr. (born 1945) to live with Charles & Pearl while she was working in Washington, D.C., and her husband, Bob Bloxton, Sr., was overseas during World War II.

Charles (36) married Miss Mary W. Bunch (35) on July 6, 1958, in Maxton, Robeson Co., NC (license issued July 1, 1958; Minister: Max Alfred Miller; Witnesses: Mrs. Peggy O. Sheppard, Paul W. Sullivan, and Charles Cashwell. They had three daughters: Martha Louise Mayo, stillborn in 1959 (placenta separated from Mary lifting bedridden Pearl, called "Grandma Pearl" by Charles & Mary's two surviving daughters: Mary Emeline Anderson & Martha Sadler.

Charles, Mary, and their two daughters continued to live on the property, but the house began to deteriorate, so Charles commenced building a "mirror image" house up against the old homestead, which is the house that stands on the property today, but was sold after Charles and Mary passed away.

Charles was one of the pianists at the Vandemere United Methodist Church in 1956 (see page 46 of their history).

Charles and Bea's spinster Aunt Pearl Edwards lived in Pearl's parents' home in Vandemere until Pearl's death. Bea Lea inherited the house and land from her Grandmother Edwards, but had moved out West, so she signed over the deed to Charles for $1, since he, his wife, Mary, and their two daughters lived on the property, and Charles had built a "mirror copy" of the original house that was deteriorating and was torn down after the new house was completed.
