Ventura County Star - (Jan/26/2005)

Mildred Lucille Cody passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.

She had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for more than nine years. She was 84 years old. Lou was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Milburn, Okla., to Oscar Byron and Cora Myrtle Bonham Rhea. She was raised on her family's farm in Milburn, where they grew peanuts. She graduated from Milburn High School in 1936. During World War II, she worked as a Rosie the Riveter in Witchita, Kan., and Tulsa, Okla. On Oct. 12, 1945, she married Jess Cody. That same year, they moved to Ventura, where they raised their family. She worked as a bookkeeper for Lagomarsino's Wholesale Liquors from 1953 to 1986. Lou was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed all types of needlework. She was very proud of the blue ribbon she won at the Ventura County Fair for a quilt she had made for her granddaughter, Tamara. She was a wonderful cook and an excellent baker. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. We will all especially miss her fried chicken dinners which usually ended (if we were lucky) with apple pie. She also loved gardening and grew beautiful flowers of all kinds.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Loren Blair of Ventura; daughter-in-law, Darlene Cody of Ventura; grandchildren, Tamara and Aaron Asher of Camarillo, Matthew and Coreen Cody of Paso Robles, and Beverly and Kelly Martin of Ventura; great-grandchildren, Bryson, Jonah, Baylor, Campbell and Jude Asher of Camarillo, Evan and Brieanne Cody of Paso Robles, and Kayla, Clarissa and Kenna Martin of Ventura; son, Noel of Ventura; sisters Joyce Fillmore of Oklahoma City and Willie Faye Ward of Tulsa, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Cecile Irene Rhea; husband, Jess Noel Cody; and granddaughter Bethany Anne Cody. The family would like to thank the staff at Ventura Convalescent Hospital for their kind and loving care over the last seven years.

Burial will be Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Condon Grove Cemetery in Milburn, Okla. Arrangements are under the direction of Charles Carroll Funeral Home in Ventura and Clark Funeral Home in Tishomingo, Okla.
