Edith Smith, daughter of Luke Smith (1715 – 1770) and the former Judith Farris (1715 – 1811), was born 1740 in Henrico Parish, Virginia. She was one of seventeen children.
Edith's family later moved to northwest South Carolina in the Ninety-Six District, where she met and married Nehemiah Howard in 1753. Edith and Nehemiah Howard would have fourteen children.
After Nehemiah died in 1798, Edith moved to Milledgeville, Georgia with her sons, John and Mark. Here Edith lived until her death on the 27th day of January 1829 at the age of 89 years old. She was laid to rest in the family cemetery.
