Reverend Monsignor Julius Gerard Walle, 85, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at St. Joseph Church Rectory, Cheneyville, La., where he was priest-in-charge since 1990.

The Most Reverend William B. Friend and the priests of the Diocese of Alexandria will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Walle at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004 in Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral. Reverend Monsignor Steve Testa will be the homilist. Interment will be in Maryhill Priests' Cemetery, Pineville, under the direction of John Kramer & Son.

Monsignor Walle, a native of New Orleans, was ordained to the priesthood in 1956 by Bishop Charles P. Greco. After ordination, he served as an associate pastor at the Cathedral and Cabrini Church. He was a professor at Maryhill Seminary from 1958-1967. He taught at Holy Savior Menard High School from 1967 -1972. In 1973, Monsignor was appointed Rector of the Cathedral, a position he held until 1985. He was made a Prelate of His Holiness with the title "Monsignor" in 1978 and appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Alexandria from 1984 -1991. Monsignor Walle began his ministry at Cheneyville in 1990 and continued there after his retirement in 1991 until his death.

He served in various other capacities such as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Council #1134, chairman of the Bicentennial Commission, a member of the Presbyteral Council and a Diocesan Consultor.

Monsignor Walle was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and May Steger Walle; five brothers, Francis, Edward, Anthony, Joseph and Albert; and three sisters, Mary Bernadette, Clare and Rita Walle. He was an avid genealogist.

Those left to mourn his passing are sister, Mary Louise Webb; five nieces, Laura Webb Beverly, Sarah Webb, Donna Walle, Deborah Walle Kyle and Karen Walle Graham; two nephews, Douglas and Stephen Walle; three grandnieces; three grandnephews; a great-grandniece and great-grandnephew, as well as his fellow priests and laity of the Diocese of Alexandria, especially the people of St. Joseph Church, Cheneyville.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 3 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at John Kramer & Son and from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. with Reverend Monsignor Frederick Lyons, P.A. presiding.

Visitation on Wednesday will begin at 8 a.m. until the time of the funeral at the Cathedral.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor Testa on Thursday, April 1 at 7 p.m. in St. Joseph Church, Cheneyville. Cocelebrants will be Rev. James Nellikunnel and Rev. Louis Sklar, Pastor and Pastoral Administrator respectively of St. Joseph Church.
