NOTED AMERICAN ARCHITECT, GENERAL and ENGINEER.
GEN. LEIF J. SVERDRUP, a noted engineer and U.S. Army military officer who was highly innovative in many commercial, military and institutional construction, architecture and engineering projects during World War II and later, founded the SVERDRUP and PARCEL engineering firm in St. Louis with JOHN IRA PARCEL, a former engineering professor.

Born at Sogndal, Norway, on Jan. 11, 1898, he was the son of Rev. Johan E. Sverdrup (a minister) and Maria Vallan Sverdrup. A brother, Harald, preceded him in death in Norway.

During his lengthy professional and military career, Sverdrup took the St. Louis-based architectural firm to new professional heights with worldwide projects in North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere. These included airports, universities, refineries, cultural centers and military projects.

His wife, MOLLY EGILSRUD SVERDRUP, shared many of his numerous civic and professional activities during his life in the St. Louis area and throughout the USA. Widely honored by numerous civic and engineering groups later in life, Gen. Sverdrup died in St. Louis on Jan. 2, 1976 at the age of 78.

Gen. Leif J. Sverdrup's funeral was held at the Episcopal Church of St. Michael and St. George in Clayton, MO., followed by full military honors with cremation and inurnment in the "Corridor of Service" Columbarium in the VALHALLA CHAPEL of MEMORIES at Valhalla Cemetery in North St. Louis County, MO. His cremains are interred in the "Corridor of Service" next to his wife MOLLY and his sons JOHAN and RALPH SVERDRUP.

A biography of LEIF J. SVERDRUP entitled "LEIF SVERDRUP: ENGINEER-SOLDIER at HIS BEST" was published by author and historian Gregory Franzwa by Patrice Press (1980) of Gerald, MO, and is commercially available nationwide. A major building on the Webster University Main Campus in suburban St. Louis, MO is named the "Leif J. Sverdrup Hall," in honor of his philanthropy to that educational institution. (A gallery of the building contains his oil portrait as well as notable awards he received during his lifetime).
