Walter E. Barnes of Tecumseh died Friday, Aug. 27, at a local hospital. He was 97 years old.

He was born June 15, 1907, in Richland County, Ill., to Harvey Van Barnes and Cora Ratcliffe Barnes.

He married Cleo Mary Riggs on May 14, 1927. She preceded him in death.

He later married Thelma Cleveland on Sept. 6, 1987.

He worked as a field and plant mechanic for 41 years at Sinclair Oil. He also worked nine years as a picture framer at Steiner's Paint.

He was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in Tecumseh.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Lindel Barnes; one grandson, Robert Swinson; his parents, two sisters and one brother.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Barnes of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Roella and Ray Swinson of Shawnee; one daughter-in-law, Lois Barnes of Munds Park, Ariz.; two grandsons, Randy Swinson and his wife, Ann, of Wichita, Kan., and Roger Swinson of Shawnee; two granddaughters, Kathy Barnes of Chandler, Ariz., and Julie Bernal and her husband, Jim, of Cave Creek, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Jane and Garland Thomas of Norman, and Sue Ann and Gerald McDaniel of Lakewood, Colo.; stepgrandchildren, Tracy Thomas of Norman, Jay and Kimberly Thomas of Edmond, Mason McDaniel of Denver, Katrina and Dan Cavaliere of Littleton, Colo.; three stepgreat-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with the Rev. Kay Smith and the Rev. Tracy Schumpert officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Shawnee or Broadway United Methodist Church in Tecumseh.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.
