Helen was born the 2nd of 3 daughters born to Charles Vincent Spezia (1872 – 1943) and Mary Catherine (Mayme) Hanlon (1874 – 1956). She had an older sister Kathleen (Jonas) and a younger sister Josephine.

She met a baseball player who spent the summers of 1928-1930 playing in Oelwein, a left handed pitcher by the name of Marlowe Phillip Godbout (1907 – 1973). She followed him to his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota in the early 1930's and they married on November 3, 1934. They had a baby who died soon after birth in 1938. They divorced in the early 1940's. Helen spent the rest of her life living in St. Paul.
