Mrs. Alma Louise Montgomery Claris, 97, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Azalealand Nursing Home.

Mrs. Claris was born and raised in Savannah and attended local public schools. She lived in New York City for many years but in 1969, following the death of her husband, Louis Claris, she returned to Savannah and rejoined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church . Mrs. Claris was the daughter of St. Julian and Evelena Montgomery. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, the late Reverend Peter W. and Mrs. Louise Williams (Mother Lou), who organized the Sunday school at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.

Her brother, Russell Montgomery, and sister, Carolyn Butler, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two nieces: Mrs. Evelyn Gordon of Washington , D.C. , and Ms. Anita Butler of Brooklyn , N.Y. , and close family friend Gladys Lambert of Savannah.

Graveside services and burial will be held Monday, May 7, at 11:00 a.m., Reverend Chester Ellis officiating, Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery, 1600 Wheaton St. Remembrances: St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church , 624 Waters Ave.
