George's paternal grandfather was the game protector for Emperor Franz Joseph (1830-1916), Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time of World War I.

George Joseph Zatsick, the son of Joseph B. and Mary K. Banish Zatsick, was born on April 14, 1919, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

He grew up on a farm near Reynoldsville and Adrian, Pennsylvania.
He attended St. Adrian Catholic Church. He graduated from St. Adrian Grade School, then from Punxsutawney High School. He skipped a couple of years in school.

He served all over the United States in procurement, checking out factories and supplies. He was preparing for deployment to Japan when the war ended. He was discharged on December 9, 1945.

His future wife lived next door to Jefferson Grocery in Punxsutawney, where he later worked as a warehouse foreman. He gave her a ride to church, then asked her for a date. They were married on May 14, 1947, at Sts. Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
