She was a native of Lincoln County, daughter of the late James Oscar and Rosa Arndt Cooke, wife of the late Carl Harold Harwell, owner of Lee Dry Cleaners for 30 years, member of First United Methodist.

When Flossie Lee Mary Elizabeth Cooke was born on September 23, 1909, in Lincoln County, North Carolina, her father, James, was 31 and her mother, Rosa, was 28. She was the third child out of eight children. She married Carl Harold Harwell in 1927 in York, South Carolina. They had three children during their marriage James, Jerry, and Joseph. Flossie was a grandmother of six, a great grandmother of eleven, and a great great grandmother of several great grandchildren. She died on May 7, 2000, in Newton, North Carolina, at the age of 90, and was buried in Maiden, North Carolina.
