Obituary of Henry Holtgrieve, The Oregonian, Feb 1, 1906: Henry Holtgrieve Dies on his Farm at Columbia slough.
Henry Holtgrieve, an Oregon pioneer of 1850 and a farmer of Columbia Slough, died yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, at his home on the Columbia Slough road, surrounded by his wife and all his children, who had been waiting for the end for several days. It became apparent to the pioneer and his family a few days ago that death was near, and he made arrangements accordingly. Mr. Holtgrieve was among the last of the pioneers who settled the Columbia District, only a few remaining. Born in Hanover, Germany, March 18, 1828, he came to this county in 1842, making the voyage in a sailing vessel. He proceeded to Missouri and in Franklin County his father purchased 40 acres. Here Henry remained until 1850 when he hired himself out as a driver of an ox team bound for Oregon, and arrived in Vancouver, Wash., October 17, 1850. Two years afterwards he took up a donation land claim on the Columbia River, seven miles northeast of Portland. When he took up this claim it was covered with heavy timber, but he erected a cabin and then went to work clearing the land. In 1855 he married Miss Elizabeth Shepherd, as the result of a romance which had its beginning while crossing the plains. She was a daughter of Henry Shepherd, also a Pioneer. He came to his present farm in 1886, comprising 275 acres and which is a model farm. Besides, he owns a large amount of land in Clackamas and Yamhill counties, Oregon and in Clark county, Washington. He also owned some Portland property. He was a highly respected citizen of Multnomah county, an honored member of the Oregon Pioneer Association, the Historic Society and of Mount Tabor Lodge no. 42, A.F.& A.M. of which he was a past master. He left a widow and the following children out of a family of eight; Mrs. Emma L. Fitzgerald, of Columbia Slough; Mrs. Oceanna Baker of Troutdale, Charles E. Holtgrieve of Columbia Slough, John Holtgrieve of Vancouver, Washington; Mrs. A. L. Miller of Columbia Slough. Mr. and Mrs. Holtgrieve celebrated their Golden wedding at their home, March 11, 1905. The funeral which will be under the suspices of Mount Tabor Lodge, A.F.&A.M., will take place tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the family residence on Columbia Slough, and the place of burial will be in Columbia Masonic Cemetery.
