Johann and Maria Albreckt sailed to America aboard the “City of Richmond” in July 1874 with 67 other Swiss-German Mennonite families called the Schweizer Group. They had left behind 3 babies, 2 daughters and a son who were buried in their village of Kotosufka. On August 28, 1874, three days before arriving in New York harbor Maria gave birth to a son, Johann. Several days later they boarded an immigrant train bound for Yankton in the Dakota territories. Many families of their group homesteaded the area 35 miles North of Yankton. Life was very hard but by 1888 Johann had a farm, a comfortable home and 5 children. Sadly their eldest son lost his life in the terrible blizzard of 1888.
