He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a degree in agricultural education. He received his master's and doctorate degrees in vocational education from the University of Minnesota. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He was a member of United Methodist Church and the Rotary Club of Platteville. He also was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Epsilon Pi Tau. He enjoyed woodworking.
