Fourth Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Chicago who was installed as Bishop on January 21, 1859. On September 10, 1880 he resigned as Bishop due to illness and lived in a sanatorium in St. Louis until his death. He was originally buried in Calvary cemetery in Evanston, but reburied in Mt. Carmel in March of 2001 under the direction of Cardinal Francis George. He was interred in the Bishop's Mausoleum.
