MT. VERNON — — Bert Austin Jr., 87, of San Jose, Calif., passed away peacefully at his home on April 7, 2012, surrounded by family.
Mr. Austin was born in Vermillion County, Ogden, on Dec. 9, 1924, the oldest son of Berthyl B. and Edna (Minor) Austin. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy during WWII. He was a radioman on blimps while stationed at Moffitt Field, Calif. After retiring from EMCO Distributing Company, he and his wife Alice delighted in travelling extensively in their RV and playing golf along the way.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Austin of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Beverly Vessa and husband Jesse of San Jose, Calif. and Deborah Altermueller and husband Rick of Ripon, Calif.; six grandchildren, Jeff Boney of Arlington, Wash., Ryan Boney and wife of Salida, Calif., Dennis Altemueller of Ripon, Calif., David Altemueller and wife of San Jose, Calif., Gabriel Martinez and wife of San Jose, Calif. and Sarah Martinez of Florida; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, R.C. Austin and wife Effie Mae of Dix and Lavern Austin and wife Betty of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Velma Ullery of Texico and Patricia Connaway of Pinckneyville; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Austin of Granite City and June Austin of Texico; two aunts, Maxine Donoho of Salem and Mary I. Smith of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; two brothers, Waymon Austin and Marvie Austin; and brother-in-law, Earl Ullery.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday in the Oak Hill Chapel of the Roses, in San Jose, Calif., with interment to follow.
