ALFRED CALDWELL DIED AT 4 A.M.

Civil War Veteran Passed Away at Home of Daughter Mrs. S.O. Russell

Alfred Caldwell, Civil War veteran, died at 4 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S.O. Russell, 106 East Lowe street after an illness of two weeks culminating a two-year period of ill health.
Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and will be conducted by Dr. C.L. Tennant of the Methodist church and Rev. R.T. Fine of the Free Methodist church. Interment will be in Abingdon.
The following biographical sketch was written by Mr. Caldwell at Abingdon in July 1914, and found among his effects today.
Alfred Caldwell was born in Wayne County, Ind. February 27, 1843. His parents moved to Lee county, Iowa in April the same year and settled close to Pilot Grove, where he grew to manhood. After growing to manhood he enlisted in the Forty fifth Iowa Infantry and served out his term of service. His parents moved to Denmark, Iowa where he attended school two terms, after which he worked on farms for different ones in Lee county for a year or two. Then came to Jefferson county, Iowa where he got acquainted with his wife Mary A. Hudson. They were married in Jefferson county, Iowa October 31, 1867 at her father's Joseph Hudson by James C. Couger minister of the M.E. church. To this union were born five children of which four are still living, the oldest a girl, died when fifteen years and six months old. The other boys are living in South Dakota and another boy in Oklahoma, one daughter living in Jefferson county Iowa.
Mr. Caldwell lived five years in Missouri after he was married then moved back to Jefferson county Iowa where he has since lived. He united with the Congregational church of Denmark, Iowa in 1882 and was a member of that church twelve years, after which he joined the M.E. church at Brookeville, Iowa and was a member until 1909 when he joined by letter the M.E. church at Birmingham, Iowa where he lived one year when he moved to Abingdon, Iowa.
His wife died eight years ago and since that time he has been making his home with his daughter. The following children survive Ota M. Caldwell and Milton E. Caldwell of Mina, South Dakota. Royal Caldwell of Stillwater Okla., Mrs. S.O. Russell of Fairfield. The following are his brothers and sisters Andrew M. Caldwell of Custer, S.D. who is here for the funeral; William Caldwell of Lexington, Nebr.; Mrs. Ida Howard of Wyaconda, MO. And Mr. And Mrs. Angelina Blizzard of Connellsville, Missouri.
