F. E. Heath, 73, Former clothier and Ex-postmaster at Plainwell, dies
Plainwell - Fred Eugene Heath, 73, former Plainwell postmaster, died this morning at his home following an illness of two years.
He was born Aug. 26, 1866 in Silver Creek, the son of John and Elizabeth Heath, pioneers of the village, the family moving to Plainwell five years later. He attended Plainwell schools and was graduated from the Plainwell high school.
Railroad appraiser -
He learned the tailoring trade from John Hitchcock and for many years engaged in the retail clothing business in the firm of Heath and Pell. He worked several years for the New York Central Railroad as special appraiser of Michigan property.
He served as postmaster under the Harding, Coolidge and Hoover administrations. He retired two years after he was injured in an automobile accident from which he never fully recovered.
Prominent Mason -
At the time of his death he had been a member of all Masonic bodies, and held a life membership in the Plainwell Lodge no. 235. He was a 32nd degree Mason, with membership in the DeWitt Clinton consistory, of which he was local chairman. He was also a noble of the Saladin Temple, Mystic Shrine of Grand Rapids.
His first marriage was to Harriet Copp Collister, who died in 1925. In 1929 he married Mae Parelee [sic] of Kalamazoo, who survives.
Other survivors are a stepson, Clarence C. Collister, a step-daughter, Mrs. Roylston M. McAvoy, Saginaw, one grandchild, one sister, Mrs. Nora Blackmore, Portland, Ore.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 Wednesday from the Johnson funeral home with burial in Hillside Cemetery.
