Mrs. Lyda [sic] B. Abernathy, former resident of South Virginia Street who taught hundreds of Hopkinsville children during more than a quarter-century of teaching in city public schools, died early today in Louisville.
Mrs. Abernathy, widow of Henry H. Abernathy, had been in failing health for several months mid taken two weeks ago to St. Joseph's Infirmary, where she died at 3:30 o'clock this morning.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2:30 p.m, at the First Baptist Churach, Dr. W. E. Burton, dean of Bethel College, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Pettus White, Pollard White, Gilmer Pursley, Frank Bassett Jr., Lucian Jones, and Jack Lacy.
The body will arrive from Louisville late this afternoon and will be at the Fuqua Funeral Home until the hour of the services.
Mrs. Abernathy was born Nov. 13, 1873, a daughter of the late Reuben R. Donaldson and Mrs. Kate Gish Donaldson, Hopkinsville, residents. Most of the 30 years she taught in the city school system were spent at Virginia Street School. She was a charter member of the History and Literature Club.
While in Hopkinsville, she was a member of the First Baptist Church but, on moving to Louisville, was affiliated with the Deer Park Baptist Church. She and her husband, a well-known tobacconist in Hopkinsville, were married May 3, 1899. She moved to Louisville in 1946.
Surviving are a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Abernathy, a teacher in the Louisville schools and with whom she made her home; a son, Henry Abernathy of Hopkinsville; a step son, H. Baylor Abernathy of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Nell B. Perkins of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a granddaughter, Miss Anne Abernathy of Hopkinsville.
