One of the original families in the Ladysmith area. He was born in Clackmas, Oregon to Simon Holman Ivey & Bridget Delia (Murphy) Ivey, and went to the Island with his parents when he was only 1 years old (Simon and Delia are also buried in Ladysmith Cemetery). His father Simon was born in Cornwall, England, and his mother Delia was born in Dublin, Ireland. His parents met and married in Australia where some of his siblings were born before the family relocated from Austraila first to United States (first California where one brother Richard (buried in Ladysmith Cemetery) was born in Californa - the family lived in Clackamas, Oregon for a short period of time where his father worked in the logging industry before the family settled on Vancouver Island. Brother John Ivey (born Australia - also buried in the Ladysmith Cemetery - also never married) James never married, and was a fisherman and miner.

James "Jim" was a permanent resident of Ladysmith, BC; however, he had been in the hospital in Vancouver, BC when he passed away.

Most of his immediate family are buried in the Ladysmith Cemetery. James has five siblings: Mary, Ann, John, Simon, Richard & Grace. Only two of his siblings married, and had children. Richard Ivey married Ellen (Little) & had 4 children: Sara, Grace, Myrtle, Richard (Dick) they are all interned in the Ladysmith Cemetery. His sister Grace married Herman Offerhaus and had 3 children. (Grace is interned in Chilliwack, BC)
