Joseph L. Bianchi, 89, of 502 Park Avenue, Woolrich, passed away Monday, Dec., 10 2012 at Jersey Shore Hospital.

He was born in Lock Haven on Dec. 1, 1923, the son of the late Stephen and Rose Frigale Bianchi.

He married the former Lu Herr at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Lock Haven on Jan. 8, 1949. She preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 2003.

Joe was a 1943 graduate of Lock Haven High School.

He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II in the European Theater with the 446 Bomber Group as an aerial Tail & Turret Gunner, completing 31 missions and reaching the rank of Sergeant.

After the war he attended the former Williamsport Technical School where he trained to be a carpenter. He was the owner of Bianchi Woodworking and worked at Piper Aircraft as an electronics technician before retiring after 30 years of service.

In his retirement years he took up wood carving and became very proficient at it, often winning ribbons at the Cook Forest shows and taught wood carving at Lock Haven University for three semesters. He was also an avid fisherman.

Joe was a member of the Holy Spirit Parish in Lock Haven, the Sons of Italy and the Lock Haven Elks.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Lock Haven with Rev. Father Joseph Orr officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Schenck's Cemetery, Howard.

A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Sons of Italy prayer service at 6 p.m. at the Moriarty Funeral Home & Crematory, 112 E. Church St., Lock Haven.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Spirit Parish, Lock Haven.
