VINCENT MORETTI, born about 1925, a convicted burglar and an associate of Steve Garcia, a burglar who was found stabbed to death last week, was found slain in the back seat of a Cadillac Saturday in Stickney.

With Moretti, 43, of 3047 Odell Av., was the body of Burglar Donald Swanson, also known as Ralph Reno.

Police said the throats of both Moretti and Swanson had been slashed.

Their bodies were found stacked in the back seat of a Cadillac in the parking lot of Esther's Place, a tavern at 5009 S. Central Av., Stickney Township.

Esther Bartke, 44, said the snow-covered car had been parked in the lot since Wednesday.

Chicago police said Moretti was a known associate of Steve Garcia, 29. Garcia's body was found Thursday stuffed in the trunk of a rented car in the parking lot of the Sheraton O'Hare Motor Hotel, 6810 N. Mannheim Rd., Rosemont.

The killings of Moretti and Swanson bring to five the number of big-time burglars found dead or missing recently.

Also killed was Bernard Ryan, 34. Ryan was found shot to death Jan. 20 in Stone Park.

Another known burglar, John Mandell, 31, of 3938 Jarlath Av., Lincolnwood, an expert in circumventing burglary alarm systems, vanished Jan. 16.

Police speculated that the burglars are being murdered by members of the crime syndicate because they are not giving the mob its share of the loot.

VINCENT Moretti's killing bears some resemblance to the murder of his twin, Salvatore.

In 1957, Salvatore's body was found stuffed in a car trunk in rural Will County after he had been shot and strangled to death.

Both brothers were members of the notorious Moretti family who grew up on the West Side. [Chicago Tribune (IL), February 05, 1978, Record Number: 19780205fp008, [Copyright 1978, Chicago Tribune. For permission to reprint, contact Chicago Tribune.]
