Based on enlistment, his service includes Battles of Ft Henry,Tn(Feb 6), Ft Donelson,Tn(Feb 16) and Shiloh,Tn(Apr 6-7, 1862). The 8th, 12th & 14th Iowa comprised 4/5ths of the troops in "The Hornet's Nest" at Shiloh. They held their
ground for 10 hours against attack after attack allowing the Union time to bring reinforcements to rear lines and snatch victory from defeat. Finally surrounded by 10 times their number and out of ammunition they had no choice but to throw down their arms and surrender only to see many of their number shot down with their arms in the air. The majority of all three regiments were captured. The
enlisted men were sent to various prisons in Alabama & Georgia suffering great privation. They were paroled and exchanged on dates ranging from May to Nov in
1862. In 1863, the 14th was reunited and reorganized at Davenport,IA. Duty at Cairo,IL until Jan 1864.
