James Avery James Avery Whitehead enlisted in the Confederate Army 5th Missisisppi Brigade, Capt. Jas. A. Comfort Company F on August 3, 1862. This was soon changed to Company D, 35th Mississippi Brigade. James A. Whitehead was captured after the Second Battle for Corinth at Coffeeville. . He was sent to Alton Ill Federal Prison where on March 15, 1863 James A. Whitehead died of pneumonia at Alton Ill prison. The prison at Alton was built for 250 but at one point had over 1100 Confederate prisoners. Conditions were harsh. Dysentery, small pox and other conditions were rampant.

A memorial marker for James A. Whitehead was placed at the Whitehead Cemetery in 2009 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Sons of Confederate Veterans.
