Roy was born in the state line area of Eldred, PA. His father was George Washington Dickinson (1848-1910) and his mother was Orisa Gleason (1849-1920.) They were married in 1872 and had 5 children from 1874-1883. Roy married Katherine Field on 16 October 1902. They had 11 children from 1904—1928 and raised two grandchildren. When they lived in Marvin Creek, Roy worked in the Berney Bond cut glass factory on Water Street in Smethport, PA as a cut glass smoother, fireman, and oil well puller. Roy bought a farm in East Smethport in 1918. He had 6 cows, a bull and a horse for field work. He grew wheat, oats, and buckwheat which he cut with a grain cradle until thrashing machines began to come farm to farm. He harvested and sold hay for many years. During that time in 1922, he was mangled in a gas engine while pulling a well and survived with the help of his co-worker, a doctor who rushed to help, and a neighboring farmer who provided for him until he could be moved home. For many years he worked for the Department of Highways maintaining two sections of road with his Model T, later a Model A which he had converted into pickups for spreading cinders on the roads. He used a 1930 pickup until he retired. Roy also did chain measurements of land for people. Roy was an active member of the East Smethport Evangelical Brethren Church. He died on November 12, 1959 at the Bradford Hospital and was buried in the Kasson Cemetery.
