In the 1960s Louis Abolafia was part of the Greenwich Village Art Scene and organized "love ins" and "happenings" during the hippie era. He is credited with coining the phrase "Make Love Not War". In 1968 he ran for president against Richard Nixon as the naked Hippie "Love Candidate". A famous poster shows the candidate naked and holding a strategically placed hat. His campaign slogan was ''What have I got to hide?'' He claimed he received over two million votes. In 1974 he moved to San Francisco where he and his friend, Perry Mann, created the annual Exotic Erotic Ball, an outrageous costume event. He later moved to Los Angeles.
