In 1938, Bauhaus-trained artist and architect Herbert Bayer fled Nazi Germany and made his way to New York City. There he worked at Vogue magazine before moving with his wife to Aspen. In Aspen he created posters promoting the town's fledgling ski industry, and went on to design the Aspen Institute, plus a striking ultramodern home for himself. The house attracted the attention of oilman Robert Anderson who hired Bayer to collect art for the Atlantic Richfield Corporation. Bayer is probably best known in Colorado for the 85-foot-tall, canary-yellow sculpture, "Articulated-Wall," that looms over the Design Center on South Broadway Boulevard. More than 8,000 of the artist's works are now housed in the Denver Art Museum.
