Richard was born in Denver, Colorado, prior to his parents moving to Covina, California. He enlisted in the Marines 16 May 1966, at a recruiting office in Los Angeles, California.
Richard arrived in Vietnam 20 August 1967 and was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Richard died as a result of shrapnel wounds to the face, with partial face amputation and amputation of his left arm and leg from a grenade and TNT satchel charge when enemy forces engaged the Marines, while they were set-up in their Night Defensive Position, in the vicinity of Hai Lang and 8 kilometers south southeast of the Quang Tri Airfield, during Operation Belt Drive.
Richard served his country for 1 year and 3 months and had been in Vietnam for 10 days.
Survived by his wife, Marcy E Ferguson, a daughter; Sherry L, and a son; Richard Jr, all of 3309 Vineland Avenue, Baldwin Park, California.

Both parents were deceased, Lloyd Eugene and Margaret Ferguson.

CPL Richard E. Ferguson was awarded the Purple Heart (PH) as a military member of the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. The PH is awarded to servicemembers who were wounded or killed while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
