Obituary: Merton Henry was born January 28, 1896 in Sioux, Iowa, the son of Jerry and Ida Bragg Henry and entered into death December 8, 1977 after attaining the age of 81 years, 10 months and 10 days.
Merton grew up on a farm four miles west of Hawarden and on November 4, 1917 was married to Amy Nelson at Hawarden. The couple farmed in the Hawarden-Alcester area until her death on May 3, 1932. On August 21, 1934, Mr. Henry was married to Opal Edwards at Elk Point, South Dakota. They made their home on farms in the Alcester and Big Springs area until their retirement in 1963. At that time they moved to Hawarden. Mrs. Henry died January 22, 1972. Since 1974, Merton has been a resident of Colonial Manor at Hudson, South Dakota.
Mr. Henry was baptized in the Big Springs Baptist Church in 1938 where he retained his membership until his death.
Among the survivors who gratefully shared his life are his son, Alvie of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; his three daughters, Eddie Leu (Mrs Paul Newberg) of Wausa, Nebraska, Bonny (Mrs. Orlin Anderson) of Webster, Wisconsin and Glenda (Mrs. Babs Masha) of Lagos, Nigeria; one sister, Mrs Mable Tiller of Bellevue, Nebraska; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews including Mrs. Lavon Knapp who lived the first five years of her life in his home. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Beatrice Arleen in 1926, one brother and one sister.(Src: Alcester, S.D. Union Newspaper, December 8, 1977.)
